Student Support Services

Walton-Verona Schools strives to serve all students in a caring environment with an emphasis on transitioning through life successfully.

Mental Health Services
Walton-Verona ISD promotes mental health wellness through numerous services including counseling, crisis prevention/intervention, immediate safety response, coping strategies and suicide prevention.  Research shows that addressing students’ social and emotional needs leads to greater success in school and in life.

Special Education
Walton-Verona Independent School District is dedicated to serving the needs of and providing high-quality education for students with special needs. Our staff of professionals are trained to address a variety of issues and needs. The goal of the program is to provide specially designed instruction, related services, adaptations, and modifications to enable all students, regardless of disability, to progress and be successful in their educational setting. The staff works to assess educational strengths and needs of students; diagnose specific learning and behavior problems; evaluate mental and emotional problems which may interfere with school learning; confer with parents/guardians and teachers to interpret and discuss the result of psychological evaluations as needed; and refer students to community resources when special help is needed beyond the school level.

Title III - English Language Learners (EL)
The Walton-Verona Independent School District provides EL services for students who qualify for the program. The services are designed to assure a smooth transition to the English-speaking classroom so that your child has every opportunity to be socially and academically successful. Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is a civil right act prohibiting discrimination based on disability. It was enacted to eliminate barriers that exclude persons with disabilities. Section 504 applies to all agencies that receive federal funds, including public schools, federal agencies, and places of public accommodation. In the Walton-Verona School System, all staff and administrators have the responsibility of insuring that all students with disabilities are identified, evaluated and provided with needed accommodations and services, resulting in a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Section 504 is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights.

Public school districts have the duty to provide a free appropriate public education to all qualified disabled students. A FAPE must include an education designed to provide educational benefit despite the child’s disability; it must be at no cost to the parent; and it must be provided in an environment that affords the greatest exposure to non-disabled peers.

District Psychologists
Our District Psychologists services students at all levels from elementary to high school. They act along with school counselors as advocates for student’s well-being, as well as, valuable resources for their educational and personal advancement. They help students in processing issued such as bullying, disabilities, low self-esteem, poor academic performance, problems with authority, and problems at home. These functions help parents, teachers and school work together for the benefit of the student.

Health & Wellness Reporting
Each fall, the Walton-Verona Independent Schools must each self-assess their Health and Wellness programs along with their Nutritional/Food Services offered to the students. These findings must be posted to our website and this information must be presented in a public forum discussion before January 31st. This is done at our January Board of Education Meeting. A list of our scheduled Board Meetings can be found here. Anyone may attend this meeting to give input. Medication Laws\Field Trips Procedures
Legislation was passed that has changed how medications are being administered by unlicensed personnel in school and/or at school events. While we have nursing staff on both campuses, there are times when unlicensed school personnel may give medications during the regular school day. However, whenever our students go on field trips, trained unlicensed personnel will be administering medications to our students. Our staff members have completed the mandatory training and they have agreed to be responsible for safely administering medications while on field trips.
 
When your child goes on a field trip, you will receive the standard fieldtrip permission form which includes the Medical Authorization Form on the back. This form must be filled out in order for your child to attend the field trip.
 
If your child does NOT require medications, simply sign section 1 of the Medical Authorization Form. If your child REQUIRES medication, go to section 2 of the Medical Authorization Form and choose:

2.a. (authorizing designated school personnel to administer medication) or 
2.b. (authorizing consent to your child to self-administer his/her emergency medication).

Once you choose 2a or b, you must fill out 2.c. listing your child’s medical information. If your child starts taking a new medication before the field trip, you MUST notify the school in writing so that appropriate provisions can be made.
